EVALUACION DE IMPACTO DEL FINANCIAMIENTO EDUCATIVO EN LA DESERCION Y LA GRADUACION: UN ANALISIS DE REGRESIONES DISCONTINUAS

Abstract

The present research evaluated the impact of the financial aid program implemented by the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello, Caracas, Venezuela, on dropout and graduation. A fuzzy regression design was used for multiple treatments with four cut-off points in the assignment variable (aid index). The results obtained show that the marginal effects on the different types of dropout are significant and present the expected signs (negative). A 1% increase in the tuition discount reduces early dropout by approximately 1% and 0.5% reduces late dropout; at the same time, it raises the graduation rate by 0.6%. The evidence seems to show that changes are needed in the program in terms of allocation criteria and amounts of financial support.

Resumen

La presente investigación evaluó el impacto del programa de ayudas económicas de la UniversidadCatólica Andrés Bello, Caracas, Venezuela, sobre la deserción y el egreso. Se empleó el diseño de re-gresiones discontinuas difusas para tratamientos múltiples con cuatro puntos de corte en la variable deasignación (índice de ayuda). Los resultados obtenidos muestran que los efectos marginales sobre losdistintos tipos de deserción son significativos y presentan los signos esperados (negativo). Un aumentodel 1% en el descuento de la matrícula reduce la deserción temprana en aproximadamente 1% y 0.5%la deserción tardía; mientras que eleva en 0.6% la tasa de egreso. La evidencia pareciera mostrar que serequiere introducir cambios en el programa en términos de los criterios de asignación y los montos deapoyo económico.
