The present study based on a documentary review on the phenomenon of cryptocurrencies. It is intended to describe the general operation of cryptocurrencies, emphasizing how this process has been in Ecuador. The article is developed in three sections, namely: a) Conceptualization of cryptocurrencies, its definition, characteristics, risks and benefits, some types of cryptocurrencies, b) bitcoin, definition and characteristics are discussed, and then a review of how it has impacted Bitcoin in some Latin American countries, to finally review c) Cryptocurrencies in Ecuador. In the methodological aspect, it is based on a documentary research from the interpretive perspective, under post positivist approaches using the descriptive-analytical method of the theoretical-documentary context, taking the bibliographic review of research works by consulting databases such as Google Scholar , specialized articles and digital books. In conclusion, it was analyzed that cryptocurrencies are a challenge for traditional banks and governments, who must respond to the demands of the digital economy and adapt to this reality. Despite all the risks associated with cryptocurrencies, their importance in the world economy is evident. It is observed, at the international level, the response of the countries is diverse and they debate between regulating and prohibiting its use. In the case of Ecuador, digital currencies are not recognized, but it is not illegal to have them, the incursion of cryptocurrencies has left a negative experience in the population victims of scams. The government created an electronic payment system with tax incentives for its use. It is recommended that the government advance a regulation for the FinTech sector in addition to being a source of information to train citizens in this matter and people interested in buying and selling crypto assets, seek advice, be cautious in investing.
El presente estudio basado en una revisión documental sobre el fenómeno de las criptomonedas. Sepretende describir el funcionamiento general de las criptomonedas, haciendo énfasis en cómo ha sidoeste proceso en Ecuador. El artículo se desarrolla en tres apartados, a saber: a) Conceptualización delas criptomonedas, se discute su definición, características, riesgos y beneficios, algunos tipos decriptomonedas, b) el bitcoin, definición y características para luego hacer una revisión de cómo haimpactado el Bitcoin en algunos países latinoamericanos, para finalmente revisar c) Lascriptomonedas en Ecuador. En el aspecto metodológico, se fundamenta en una investigacióndocumental desde la perspectiva interpretativa, bajo enfoques post positivista usando el métododescriptivo-analítico del contexto teórico- documental, tomando la revisión bibliográfica de trabajosde investigación mediante la consulta en bases de datos como Google Scholar, artículosespecializados y libros digitales. A manera de conclusión, se analizó que las criptomonedas son undesafío para la banca tradicional y los gobiernos quienes deben responder a las demandas de laeconomía digital y adaptarse a esta realidad. A pesar de todos los riesgos asociados a lascriptomonedas, es evidente su importancia en la economía mundial. Se observa, a nivel internacionalla respuesta de los países es diversa y se debaten entre regular y prohibir su uso. En el caso de Ecuador,las monedas digitales no son reconocidas, pero no es ilegal tenerlas, la incursión de las criptomonedasha dejado una experiencia negativa en la población víctimas de estafas. El gobierno creo un sistemade pago electrónico con incentivos impositivos para su uso. Se recomienda al gobierno avanzar enuna normativa para el sector FinTech además de ser una fuente de información para formar a losciudadanos en esta materia y a las personas interesadas en la compraventa de criptoactivos buscarasesoramiento, ser cautelosos en la inversión.
