Oral cancer is a multifactorial malignant neoplasm where the genetic predisposition to the disease is related to environmental factors to develop cancer with slow evolution and non-specific signs. This bibliographic review was carried out in PMC at the US National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc), in Cancer Biology of Annual Reviews (https://www.annualreviews.org), in Clinical Key (https://www.clinicalkey.com) and in Infomed (www.sld.cu) using oral cancer as descriptor. Oral carcinogenesis is described as well the factors which bring about changes in the genetic material that cause cancerous transformation by means of the activation of proto-oncogenes to oncogenes and the inactivation of tumor suppressor genes.
