This article studies the impact of COVID-19 on the indigenous communities of Chimborazo, examining the situation of the indigenous population vis-a-vis the health system and paying special attention to the role of the indigenous organizations in handling the pandemic. In addition to fieldwork in several indigenous communities of Guamote, Colta and Riobamba, the research methodology included virtual interviews with leaders of regional and national indigenous organizations. The information was analyzed by reference to the academic literature on indigenous peoples, press reports and ongoing debates about the implications of the pandemic. The study concludes that, from the point of view of the indigenous organizations, the crisis created favorable conditions to rethink community life, revitalize the practices of natural medicine, and articulate collective actions at local, regional and national levels.
Este artículo analiza el impacto del Covid-19 en las comunidades indígenas de Chimborazo, examinando la situación de la población indigena frente al sistema sanitario y prestando especial atención al papel de las organizaciones indígenas en el manejo de la pandemia. Ademas del trabajo de campo en varias comunidades indígenas de Guamote, Colta y Riobamba, la metodologia de investigación incluyo entrevistas virtuales con dirigentes de las organizaciones indígenas a nivel regional y nacional. Los datos obtenidos fueron analizados a la luz de la literatura académica sobre los pueblos indígenas, las notas de prensa y las reflexiones surgidas en el contexto de la pandemia. El estudio concluye que, desde el punto de vista de las organizaciones indígenas, la crisis creó oportunidades para repensar la vida comunitaria, revitalizar las prácticas de la medicina natural, y articular acciones colectivas a nivel local, regional y nacional.
