Latin America is one of the regions with less knowledge produced globally, some countries attach little importance to intellectual production, a fact that is reflected in the low number of publications and patents and records obtained. It is a pending task for the countries of Latin America to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the development of science, technology and innovation in a globalized economy, establishing clear intellectual property policies and relevant legislation that will allow the generation of social welfare, equity and development in the region. In the present investigation, we outline and approach the study of intellectual property in the context of Latin America and the Caribbean. To do this, we turn to specialized literature in the field, WIPO reports that provides updated information regarding registration and patent applications. The advances not in the region do not have greater relevance in relation to the rest of the regions and the perspectives should be centered in the deepening of mechanisms of promotion and diffusion, the other regions denote a prominent participation in the world context.
América Latina es una de las regiones que menos conocimiento produce a nivel global, algunos países otorgan poca importancia a la producción intelectual, hecho que se refleja en el bajo número publicaciones realizadas y de patentes y registros obtenidos. Es una tarea pendiente para los países de América Latina, aprovechar las oportunidades que brinda el desarrollo de la ciencia, tecnología e innovación en una economía globalizada, estableciendo políticas de propiedad intelectual claras y legislaciones pertinentes, que permitan la generación de bienestar social, equidad y desarrollo en la región. En la presente investigación, se esboza y acerca al estudio de la propiedad intelectual en el contexto de América Latina y el Caribe. Para ello, se acude a literatura especializada en el ámbito, informes de la OMPI que otorga información actualizada en relación a registro y aplicaciones de patentes. Los avances no en la región no tienen mayor relevancia en relación al resto de las regiones y las perspectivas debieran estar centradas en la profundización de mecanismos de promoción y difusión, las otras regiones denotan una participación destacada en el contexto mundial.
